Blackfriars Friary, Bute Park Cardiff. As part of the Cardiff Bute Park £5.6 million restoration project i was commissioned to create a scale model of the Blackfriars Friary which was established on the site in 1256. The Friary was demolished after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII and all the stonework robbed away to be used on new buildings. However, between 1887 and 1897 the Marquess of Bute carried out an archaeological excavation of the site and rebuilt the Friary walls as garden features using brick. Over time these brick walls also deteriorated but are now being renovated and rebuilt so that the Friary site will again be visible to visitors. As part of the renovation the scale model was commissioned to give visitors an overview of how the entire Friary would have looked in it’s hey day. Installed at the end of Feb 2014 the model was cast in bronze and set onto a brick plinth at the site of the old Friary.
